Gary Ryan Friday January 12, 7pm Packer Theatre, Ascham School Edgecliff

Gary Ryan, one of the world’s leading exponents of the classical guitar will be performing at the Sydney Guitar Summer school. He will present a stunning program of works by Muddarra, Dowland, J.S.Bach, Piazzolla, Antônio Carlos Jobim and of course, five of his own highly crafted compositions.

Gary has pursued a highly varied international career as an acclaimed solo performer, composer and teacher. In 2013, he became the first guitarist since John Williams in 1983 to be awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music in recognition of his contribution to the instrument.

He made his London recital debut for the Park Lane Group Young Artists Series at the Purcell Room in 1994 (declared one of the highlights of the series by the Telegraph, Independent, Observer, Times and Sunday Times) and was subsequently invited to perform a series of recitals for the Kirckman Concert Society at London’s South Bank Centre.

In 1996, at the age of 27, Ryan was appointed Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music, London where he has been Assistant Head of Strings since 2009.

His celebrated guitar compositions have broadened the instrument’s appeal by combining traditional classical guitar technique with more contemporary guitar styles and a rich variety of musical influences from around the world. These include his acclaimed solo work, Benga Beat, which was premièred in 2011, Scenes from The Wild West, Lough Caragh, Hot Club Français, Shamal (premiered in 2015) and Generator for guitar duo.

In 2016 Gary Ryan was invited by John Williams to form 6 Hands, a new collaborative guitar trio with the jazz guitarist John Etheridge which has since toured the UK extensively. The trio also have further performances scheduled for 2018.
